Chemical and biological exposures, biological monitoring, exposure limits (PEL/REL/TLV), industrial hygiene assessment, occupational poisoning syndromes.
Occupational skin and dermal exposure: the cutaneous route of entry and its contribution to systemic dose. The OSHA "Skin" notation (skin designation) on the Z-1 air-contaminant tables and ACGIH TLVs flags chemicals for which absorption through the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes contributes significantly to overall occupational exposure, so air sampling alone underestimates the true dose. Percutaneous absorption of solvents, pesticides, and aromatic amines; chemicals noted for dermal absorption. Assessment of skin exposure: surface and wipe sampling, dermal patch sampling, field-portable X-ray fluorescence, and biological monitoring of internal absorbed dose. Skin protection, barrier creams, and the limits of personal protective equipment against dermal hazards.
